History of New York State Troopers

There were a number of proposals for a State Police force during the early 1900s but its creation was considerable from union interests. In 1917 in response to a murder of a construction foreman Sam Howell in Westchester County in 1913. A bill for the creation of the New York State Police was passed and the New York State Police was officially established on April 11, 1917 by the New York State Legislature.The division's first superintendent was George Fletcher Chandler, he was responsible for most of the division's early development. Chandler made the term New York State Troopers and it was the first time officers were carrying their weapons exposed on a belt, which was not common practice at the time. The New York State Police is also responsible for protecting the Governor of New York and Lieutenant Governor of New York.
